Saint Clare's Denville Hospital Welcomes New Cardiothoracic Surgeon

February 27, 2017 (Denville, NJ) – Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital recently welcomed Dr. Huzaifa A. Shakir, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in adult cardiac surgery and minimally invasive thoracic surgery.

Dr. Shakir has extensive experience in minimally invasive video-assisted thoracic surgery. His expertise is in the treatment of lung cancer and conditions affecting the pleura (the membranes around the lungs and inner walls of the chest) and mediastinum (the organs, lymph nodes, and nerves located in the chest). He also provides consultations for heart conditions.

“Dr. Shakir will be invaluable as we continue to recruit a team of highly-skilled experts and expand our cancer programs,” said Dr. Neil Udani, chief medical officer at Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital. “He is a welcome addition to our healthcare team and will certainly enhance the personalized, expert care our patients have come to expect and trust.”

“I feel a special connection to Denville Hospital, having grown up in this area,” said Dr. Shakir. “I’m originally from Morris Plains and attended Brooklawn Middle School and Parsippany High School. It’s nice to be back home and I’m thrilled to provide safe, high-quality compassionate care to our neighbors.”

Dr. Shakir is also an attending cardiothoracic surgeon at St. Mary’s General Hospital in Passaic and Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, which are also members of Prime Healthcare. He received his medical degree from Boston University, completed his general surgery residency at Northwell Health, and later completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency and fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Dr. Shakir is also a clinical assistant professor of cardiac and thoracic surgery at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Shakir has authored multiple research publications and abstracts.
