The Center for Cancer Care at Saint Clare’s offers patients suffering
from thyroid cancer a comprehensive program that begins at diagnosis and
continues through treatment and into follow-up care. Our Thyroid Cancer
Treatment Center is one of the most robust thyroid cancer programs in
the region, offering advanced screening tools, technology and procedures.
At the same time, we understand your need to find a treatment facility

specialist, known as a thyroid cancer nurse navigator, is there every
step of the way – from diagnosis to recovery – to provide
patients and their families with critical emotional support and educational
resources on how to move forward after receiving a cancer diagnosis.
Thyroid Cancer Treatment and Technology
Our cancer care experts, including accomplished radiologists, nuclear medicine
specialists, ultrasound sonographers, and surgeons, provide access to

If your healthcare provider determines that surgery to remove the tumor
and all or part of the remaining thyroid gland is the best treatment option
for you, Saint Clare’s offers our healing touch with the most advanced
equipment available to our patients. Surgery may be combined with radioactive
iodine therapy, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy.
Radioactive Iodine Therapy
Radioactive Iodine Therapy known as I-131, may be used to destroy cancerous
tissue that was not removed during surgery, or to treat thyroid cancer
that has spread to lymph nodes and other parts of the body.

Under the direction of Dr. Neil Freeman, Chairman of the Radiology Department
at Saint Clare’s, Dr. Jeffrey Wexler, Radiologist, and Dr. Jeffrey
Plutchok, who directs the nuclear medicine program, the Thyroid Cancer
Treatment Center focuses on a team approach to treatment. Our cancer specialists
focus on each patient to determine the best course of treatment. Our team
includes experienced and specially trained technologists to perform ultrasounds
and nuclear medicine studies, as well as board-certified radiologists
to interpret scans, perform biopsies and distribute radioactive iodine.
In addition to traditional medicine, we also offer nutritional counseling,
genetic counseling, community outreach and education programs, and other
supportive services to help cancer patients and their families cope with
the physical, emotional, and psychological challenges posed by cancer.
Thyroid Cancer Nurse Navigator
If you have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, we offer a complimentary
and exclusive thyroid nurse navigator, at The Center for Cancer Care at
Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital. The navigator is available to support
and guide you through diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
Our thyroid nurse navigator works closely with our multidisciplinary team
of experts including endocrinologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine
technologists, nurses, ultrasound technologists and licensed social workers
who collaborate to provide a custom, comprehensive treatment plan for
every patient and family.
The goal of a nurse navigator is to assure that you receive timely, quality
treatment for your cancer. The navigator works with your team to coordinate
all of the services you will need to fight your cancer. Our patient navigator
is available to you from the time your cancer is detected through survivorship.
In addition to efficiently coordinating your care, the navigator is compassionate
and available to discuss all the ways your diagnosis affects your life.
