The Concussion Center for Children and Adolescents at Saint Clare’s Health System offers members of the community a first line of defense against concussions. At Saint Clare’s, we understand the importance of patient education and managing concussions effectively when they occur in order to prevent problems from concussions.

Our Services
Saint Clare’s Concussion Center for Children and Adolescents, supported by the Children's Neurology and Epilepsy Center, offers the following services:
- Baseline Testing
- Post-Concussion Testing
- CIC Credentialed Physician
- Cognitive Testing
- Balance / Vestibular Testing
- Physical Therapy / Occupational Therapy
Patients that believe they may have suffered a concussion should be immediately evaluated. For post-concussion analysis, Saint Clare’s offers a certified concussion specialist. Saint Clare’s Hospital/Denville offers a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department. Patients can also be seen at our Emergency Departments in Denville, Dover and Sussex.

Concussion Statistics
- Each year, an estimated 3.8 million concussions related to sports/recreation occur in the United States. (Source: Center for Disease Control)
- From 1997 to 2007, ER visits for concussions doubled for ages 8 -13 and tripled for ages 14 - 19.
- 10% of all contact sport athletes sustain concussions yearly.
- 41% of athletes that suffered a concussion report back to sports too soon.
- 63% of all concussions occur in football.
- It is estimated that up to 20% of football players will sustain a concussion per season.
- An athlete who sustains a concussion is 4 to 6 times more likely to sustain a second concussion.
Signs and Symptoms of Concussions
The signs of a concussion may include:
- Dazed or stunned look
- Confusion
- Forgetfulness
- Clumsiness
- Slow response
- Loss of consciousness
- Change in behavior or personality
The symptoms of a concussion may include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Double or fuzzy vision
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Feeling sluggish
- Feeling “foggy”
- Change in sleep
- Memory or concentration problems
