Saint Clare's Nurse Recognized with Nursing Excellence Award
Category Winner for Nursing Excellence in Clinical Nursing, Inpatient for
DENVILLE, NJ – June 7, 2013 – Saint Clare’s Health System announced that Katie Pierson, MSN, RN-BC,
ONC, was selected as the 2013 recipient of the GEM Award for Nursing Excellence
in Clinical Care for the New York/New Jersey region of Nurse.com. The
award celebrations recognize and celebrate the achievements of dedicated
nurses at regional awards galas held throughout the United States, and
each will then compete for the national recognition of six special nurses
as 2013 Nursing Excellence GEM recipients.
Pierson was selected as the winner for the regional GEM Award for Nursing
Excellence in Clinical Nursing, Inpatient, for which the criteria is:
an RN who demonstrates superior clinical nursing knowledge and expert
skills, and applies both in ways that measurably impact the quality of
care and improve patient care outcomes in any inpatient clinical setting
or nursing specialty. Pierson was presented the award at the GEM Awards
on June 5, 2013 at the Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe.
In each region, five nurses in six specialized categories were chosen from
the hundreds of nominations received. The GEM Awards are a way of publicly
recognizing excellence in nursing by awarding nurses who were nominated,
selected and celebrated by other nurses, and who represent the best of
the best in the profession.
The GEM Award (Giving Excellence Meaning) recognizes nurses in several
categories, including Advancing and Leading the Profession; Clinical Nursing,
Inpatient; Education and Mentorship; Home, Community and Ambulatory Care;
Patient and Staff Management; and Volunteerism and Service.
Pierson was also recognized on May 18 as the 2013 recipient of the National
Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON) Outstanding Orthopaedic Nurse
Practice Award. The Outstanding Nurse Practice Award recognizes a NAON
member who has provided high quality health care to the orthopaedic patient
and has made outstanding contributions over his/her career to the field
of orthopaedic nursing. She was presented the award at the NAON 33rd Annual
Congress on May 18 in San Antonio, Texas.
Pierson serves as the Nurse Navigator for Orthopedics at the Center for
Joint Replacement at Saint Clare’s Health System. The Center for
Joint Replacement at Saint Clare’s Health System provides comprehensive
care that emphasizes education, the latest trends in pain management and
surgical techniques and shortest recovery periods. The Center includes

the Gold Seal of Approval and Disease-Specific Certification from The
