Saint Clare’s Dover Hospital offers surgical solutions to address
significant weight loss challenges and helping patients to establish and
maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Most weight loss surgeries are performed laparoscopically, commonly known
as the minimally invasive approach. This technique lends itself to a less
invasive procedure compared to conventional, open surgery.
The procedures are performed through a few small incisions, involving the
use of thin instruments and a camera. Potential benefits of this technique
include fewer complications, less pain, less time in the hospital, and
reduced recovery time overall.

Surgical Weight Loss Options
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy: A large portion of the stomach following the
major curve is removed. The open edges are then attached together (often
with surgical staples) to form a sleeve or tube with a banana shape. The
procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach.
Benefits of Vertical Sleeve
- Allows the stomach to function normally so most food can be consumed
- Eliminates the portion of the stomach that produces hormones that stimulate hunger
- Can be done laparoscopically
Gastric Bypass: A small pouch in the top part of the stomach is created.
This step restricts the amount of food the patient can consume. This pouch
is then connected to a segment of the small intestine, meaning the rest
of the stomach and a portion of the small bowel is bypassed. This bypass
prevents the absorption of calories, resulting in significant weight loss.
Benefits of Gastric Bypass
- Performed laparoscopically
- Improvement or resolution of other related health conditions
Gastric Band: A device placed around the upper section of the stomach,
creating a small pouch above the band intended to reduce the amount of
food that is consumed.
Benefits of Gastric Band
- This procedure if fully reversible
- Faster recovery period
Weight Loss Revisional Surgery

first bariatric surgery. But, patients may seek revisional surgery if
they are experiencing side effects, are not achieving their desired weight
loss, and for a variety of other reasons. Saint Clare’s Bariatric
