Therapeutic Hypothermia Treatment
As part of its advanced and high-quality care for Emergency Department
patients, Saint Clare’s now offers a Therapeutic Hypothermia program.
During a cardiac arrest, while the heart is not pumping effectively, the
brain is left without oxygen. This can lead to cell damage. After a successful
resuscitation, the brain also faces more damage from chemical reactions
that occur when the blood starts to flow again.
Induced hypothermia lowers body temperature below normal in patients at
risk for ischemic brain injury following a period of insufficient blood
flow due to cardiac arrest or stroke. This groundbreaking treatment is
the new standard of care for post sudden cardiac arrest and has been shown
to significantly improve long-term survival and quality of patient outcomes.
