The Center for Cancer Care at Saint Clare’s offers patients suffering from thyroid cancer a comprehensive program that begins at diagnosis and continues through treatment and into follow-up care. Our Thyroid Cancer Treatment Center is one of the most robust thyroid cancer programs in the region, offering advanced screening tools, technology and procedures. At the same time, we understand your need to find a treatment facility that is right for your situation, with compassionate care, answers to questions, and guidance. That is why a dedicated thyroid cancer patient specialist, known as a thyroid cancer nurse navigator, is there every step of the way – from diagnosis to recovery – to provide patients and their families with critical emotional support and educational resources on how to move forward after receiving a cancer diagnosis.

Thyroid Cancer Treatment and Technology

Our cancer care experts, including accomplished radiologists, nuclear medicine specialists, ultrasound sonographers, and surgeons, provide access to the most advanced procedures and technology available, including:

If your healthcare provider determines that surgery to remove the tumor and all or part of the remaining thyroid gland is the best treatment option for you, Saint Clare’s offers our healing touch with the most advanced equipment available to our patients. Surgery may be combined with radioactive iodine therapy, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy.

Radioactive Iodine Therapy

Radioactive Iodine Therapy known as I-131, may be used to destroy cancerous tissue that was not removed during surgery, or to treat thyroid cancer that has spread to lymph nodes and other parts of the body.

State-of-the-art equipment

The Center for Cancer Care utilizes high quality imaging and diagnostic equipment including:

  • Quality U/S guided FNA thyroid biopsies
  • 4D parathyroid cat scan
  • Afirma® Thyroid FNA Analysis
  • Radioidine I-131 ablation therapy
  • Pet scan imaging

Under the direction of Dr. Neil Freeman, Chairman of the Radiology Department at Saint Clare’s, Dr. Jeffrey Wexler, Radiologist, and Dr. Jeffrey Plutchok, who directs the nuclear medicine program, the Thyroid Cancer Treatment Center focuses on a team approach to treatment. Our cancer specialists focus on each patient to determine the best course of treatment. Our team includes experienced and specially trained technologists to perform ultrasounds and nuclear medicine studies, as well as board-certified radiologists to interpret scans, perform biopsies and distribute radioactive iodine.

Supportive Services

In addition to traditional medicine, we also offer nutritional counseling, genetic counseling, community outreach and education programs, and other supportive services to help cancer patients and their families cope with the physical, emotional, and psychological challenges posed by cancer.
