Overview

With maturity, changes occur that can affect our well-being and the way our bodies function. These changes may include increased episodes of dizziness, strokes, neurological impairments and diseases, lack of physical strength or energy, and muscle weakness. These changes may increase the risk of further injury, including falls or diminished mobility.

To ensure patients recover to their full potential and lead the highest quality of life possible, our team of physical, occupational and speech therapists work one-on-one with each patient. Our rehabilitative services departments respect our patients’ time and their healthcare dollars by never double-booking appointments and monitoring each patient’s Medicare therapy cap, if applicable.

Our Approach

Vestibular Rehabilitation: Dizziness and balance problems are common complaints in people over the age of 40, but it can also be found in athletes with concussion. Dizziness can be caused by innumerable problems, including drug interactions, anxiety, sensory loss in the legs, orthostatic hypotension (a drop in blood pressure upon standing), and disease or dysfunction of the vestibular system. Our vestibular experts are specially trained physical therapists who perform detailed evaluations to identify if the vestibular system is the cause of a patient’s dizziness or loss of balance.

Once the vestibular system is identified as the cause of dizziness and balance loss, an individualized plan of care is designed. Our experts focus on restoring each patient to their normal activities of daily living. Treatment to reverse vestibular system disorders will include education, special exercises and postural techniques, and falls prevention strategies.

If seeking care for dizziness as a symptom of concussion, visit our Sports Medicine & Concussion Rehabilitation page.

Post-Stroke Rehabilitation: Recovering from a stroke is a highly-individualized process. Many factors, such as the severity of the stroke and the overall health of the patient need to be considered. For these reasons, our therapists devise and work with plans of care that are tailored to each patient’s goals and specific needs. Generally, we aim to:

  • Increase fitness and endurance through exercise
  • Restore or increase range of motion and flexibility
  • Improve coordination and balance
  • Improve sensation
  • Reduce pain
  • Improve functional abilities through education, energy conservation techniques, and joint protection
  • Teach mobility skills, including positioning, transfers, and walking to maximize function and independence
  • Suggest assistive devices to promote independence
  • Recommend home adaptations for safer accessibility
  • Head injury/post-concussion syndrome recovery (link to: “Sports Medicine & Concussion” page)

In addition to post-stroke care, we specialize in the care and recovery from such neurologic diseases as:

LSVT BIG ® is an internationally recognized, comprehensive program to assist Parkinson’s patients to improve their flexibility, speed, and coordination of their movements in order to enhance their quality of life. The program begins with a thorough evaluation by our certified LSVT® physical therapist and treatment is administered in 16 sessions over a single month (four individual 60-minute sessions per week, in a one-month period). Our patients have had positive results and have been able to incorporate both safer and more fluid movements into their daily living. LSVT BIG® is currently offered in our Denville campus. To learn more about LSVT BIG from one of our experts, call our department at 973-625-6558.

Geriatric Rehabilitation (and Fall Prevention): As our bodies mature, our energy levels and physical abilities change. Saint Clare’s rehabilitation services can help keep older patients as active and safe as possible. Our individualized programs are tailored to help our older adults improve their balance and strength, increase their confidence, and maintain an active and social lifestyle. Our physical therapists work with patients to develop effective exercise programs designed to address specific muscle weaknesses and joint problems that increase the risk of falls and fall-related injuries. Fall related injuries may be neurologic, orthopedic, or concussion.

Personalized care delivered though our geriatric rehabilitation and fall prevention program aims to:

  • Increase fitness and endurance through exercise
  • Restore or increase range of motion and flexibility
  • Improve coordination and balance
  • Improve sensation
  • Reduce pain
  • Improve functional abilities through education, energy conservation techniques, and joint protection
  • Teach mobility skills, including positioning, transfers, and walking to maximize function and independence
