Saint Clare’s Health Adds TruBeam® Technology to Its Cancer Treatment Arsenal

Denville, NJ (June 10, 2019) –– The Center for Cancer Care at Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital is proud to announce that it has acquired the TruBeam® Advanced Radiation Treatment System for cancer. TruBeam® technology is the choice of eight of the top ten US cancer hospitals. The TruBeam® system’s patented radial therapy beam technology targets tumors with a degree of power and precision unthinkable just a few years ago. It enables Saint Clare’s to treat cancer without surgery, using powerful, state-of-the-art radiation therapy, delivered precisely and accurately and individualized for each patient. Because of its highly automated precision, TruBeam® opens the door to new possibilities for the treatment of challenging cases such as cancer in the lung, breast, abdomen, head, and neck as well as other cancers that are treatable with radial therapy.

Developed by Varin Medical Systems, TruBeam® uses high energy x-rays (photons) or in some cases streams of electrons, to destroy cancer cells. When a patient undergoes a TruBeam® treatment, a precisely shaped beam hits the cancerous cells. Their ability to reproduce is compromised and they eventually die, causing the tumor to shrink. Advantages of the new TruBeam® treatment:

  • It is non-invasive, there is no incision or surgery.
  • It is fast. It can deliver higher doses of radiation at greater speed allowing some treatments that took 10 to 30 minutes to be given in just minutes a day.
  • Precise. The system uses a highly sophisticated imaging system that allows doctors to “see” the tumor they’re treating in real time and target it with pinpoint precision, even tumors that move when you breathe – those in the lungs for example – can be precisely targeted thanks to special tools that compensate for motion during a treatment.
  • It’s versatile. It can be used to deliver advanced radial therapy or radial surgery giving doctors the flexibility to use whatever protocol is appropriate. Treatments can be modified as the tumor shrinks, only hitting the target.
  • It’s individualized. Since every tumor is different, TruBeam® can shape the radiation beam to accurately match the size and form of most tumors regardless of their shape.
  • It is comfortable. A closed-circuit television enables the radiation therapist to watch you during the treatment, and two-way audio lets you talk with the therapist.

Varian’s TruBeam® system can be used to deliver many forms of radiotherapy treatment, including image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT); intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT); stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS); and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). These different treatment modalities provide clinicians with the versatility to tailor each patient’s treatments with remarkable precision, using the most appropriate approach for each individual case.

The Center for Cancer Care will begin to treat patients with this new technology in early July.

  • Surgery, if it is part of the treatment plan, our modern, spacious surgical suites are equipped with the latest technology and amenities.
  • Radiation therapy, using the most advanced equipment available.
  • Support services. The Center for Cancer Care offers support services for people living with cancer, their families, and caregivers. The oncology social workers offer ongoing support groups and other interactive activities with the aim of educating, connecting, and empowering everyone during the cancer journey.
